The story of a family (two brothers and a sister, Franz, Karol and Nina Gwiazdon) that escaped persecution under the Pinochet military regime in Chile. “The violent overthrow of the democratically-elected Popular Unity government of Salvador Allende changed the course of the country that Chilean poet Pablo Neruda described as "a long petal of sea, wine and snow"; because of CIA covert intervention in Chile, and the repressive character of General Pinochet's rule, the coup became the most notorious military takeover in the annals of Latin American history.”

The Gwiazdon Family left to Argentina from Chile in 1976; from there they requested Political Asylum from the United Nations. Refugee status was granted and they arrived in The United States in July of 1979; Franz was six years old, Nina fifteen and Karol sixteen at the time. They meticulously answered my questions and explained the chronological series of historical and personal events, political oppression, hostility, hardships, torture, positive and negative memories, thoughts and feelings that represent their exile. |
